About JAMA Internal Medicine

JAMA Internal Medicine is an international peer-reviewed journal designed to provide an indispensable and trustworthy source of peer-reviewed evidence to advance the field of internal medicine worldwide. The journal is centered around 4 core priorities—or “4 Cs”—clinical relevance, clinical practice change, credibility, and effective, convincing communication. We intend to provide innovative and clinically relevant research for academics, clinicians, educators, researchers, and trainees across the entire field of internal medicine, including general internal medicine and internal medicine subspecialties. We strive to publish articles that are stimulating to read, educate and inform readers with the most up-to-date research, and lead to positive change in our health care systems and the way we deliver patient care. JAMA Internal Medicine is a member of the JAMA Network, a consortium of peer-reviewed, general medical and specialty publications.
The over-arching goal of the journal is to improve clinical care in internal medicine. Thus, we have particular interest in articles examining innovative and feasible approaches to improve health care outcomes and quality at the level of the patient, health care professional, or health system. Moreover, the journal would like to feature articles that employ randomized designs and pragmatic approaches to evaluate the impact of interventions on meaningful patient-centered health outcomes in real-world populations.
The journal has several series and themes that highlight areas of special interest that can be chosen by authors at the time of submission or assigned by editors during the review process:
- Less is More – articles that explore situations in which the overuse of medical care may result in harm and in which less care may result in better health.
- Women's Health – articles that address the effects of sex and gender on health across the adult lifespan.
- Health Equity – articles that consider systematic differences in the health status or health care experiences of diverse population groups, and explore equitable and just means to attain the highest level of health for all people.
- Aging and Health – articles that investigate the impact of aging and age-related diseases on health and quality of life; examine the care and outcomes of older persons; test innovations to enhance outcomes across settings; and explore ways to reduce ageism.
- Climate Change and Health – articles that investigate how climate change affects human health, and the role of the health care industry in climate change.
- Health Care Policy and Law – articles that examine issues in which governmental policies or laws influence health and/or the practice of medicine.
- Physician Work Environment and Well-Being – articles that address physician burnout and moral distress, and explore approaches to improve physician health and resilience.
- Firearm Violence – articles that explore the public health problem of gun violence, and explore ways to decrease the use of guns in homicide, suicide, and injury.
- AI and Clinical Care – articles that assess the impact of innovations in AI on patient experience, quality, equity, or efficiency of clinical care.
Journal Frequency and Access. JAMA Internal Medicine is published online weekly, every Monday, and in 12 print/online issues a year. The journal receives more than 16 million annual article views and downloads. Without any author fees, all research articles are made free access online 12 months after publication on the website. In addition, the online version is freely available or nearly so to institutions in developing countries through the World Health Organization's HINARI program.
Editorial Information. The journal’s acceptance rate is 12%. The median time to first decision is 2 days, and 40 days with review. The Journal Impact Factor is 22.5, one of the highest ranking among general and internal medicine journals. All articles are published online first.
